Guest Secrets

Swim at Goyambokka or Silent Beach rather than on the open Tangalle beaches, and always ask staff about current sea conditions. Even outside the monsoon, some days bring strong currents, and several beaches in the area have no lifeguards.

Book the Rekawa turtle watch through reception for the evening. Groups leave after dark, and the conservation project controls the visit to protect the nesting turtles. Flash photography is not allowed.

Visit Mulkirigala early in the morning, before nine, when the rock is cool and the light soft. Wear clothing covering shoulders and knees, and remove shoes and hats at the shrines.

Taste curd and treacle, a southern speciality made from buffalo curd with kithul palm syrup, sold in clay pots along the road toward Hambantota. It is a simple dessert and one of the best local tastes of the region.

Use the grocery delivery and in room fridge for long stays. Fresh fruit, water and snacks ordered through the resort save money and time, and the coffee machine means no need to walk to the restaurant for the first coffee.

Plan the safari day carefully. Yala entry is crowded early morning, and some tour operators offer half day jeeps that start before sunrise. Coordinate with reception the evening before so the breakfast box is ready and the driver arrives on time.
