Local Discovery

Goyambokka Beach, a short walk or tuk tuk ride away, is a crescent of golden sand framed by rocks and palms. It is one of the best places near Tangalle for a swim when the sea is calm, and small restaurants on the sand serve grilled fish and fresh juice. Mornings are nearly empty.

Silent Beach, next to it, lives up to its name with a quiet bay and soft sand. The water can be clear enough for snorkelling around the rocks on calm days. Some areas are used by upscale resorts, but the beach remains accessible to all.

Tangalle town, about two kilometres east, is a working fishing town with a harbour, market and small shops. The fishing boats come in early in the morning, and the fish market is lively and colourful. Tangalle Beach itself is long and open, beautiful but often with strong waves.

Mulkirigala Rock Temple, a short drive inland, is a cave temple complex on a rock rising above the forest, with reclining Buddhas and old murals. The climb involves many steps, rewarded by views over the green hinterland. Early morning avoids the heat.

About ten kilometres east, Rekawa Beach hosts a turtle conservation project where green turtles come ashore at night to lay eggs. Guided night visits are organised by the local conservation group. It is an unforgettable experience, but patience is needed as sightings are never guaranteed.
